- 3
Click "Add numbers" and download the result.

How to add page numbers to a PDF online for free
Choose one of six spots for the number: left, centre or right, at the top or at the bottom of the page. The number sits roughly a centimetre in from the edge, in dark grey, so it is easy to read on a white page without looking heavy. Font size goes from 6 to 32 pt.
The format can be a plain number or a line of text built around {n} for the current page and {total} for the last number. You can write "p. {n}", "{n} / {total}" or "Strona {n} z {total}", and accented letters come out exactly as you type them. If you change "Start at", {total} follows along: a 10-page file that starts at 5 runs from "5 of 14" to "14 of 14", which is what you want for the second part of a longer document.
Numbering happens in your browser. The PDF is not sent anywhere, and the result is saved next to the original with "_numbered" in the file name. Nothing else on the pages is changed.
Page numbers in a PDF: common problems and fixes
The number lands on top of footer text
Numbers are drawn over whatever is already on the page. Move them to the top or to another corner, or make the font smaller. If every position is crowded, run Resize PDF with a margin of a few millimetres first. That shrinks the content slightly and leaves a clean strip around the edges for the numbers.
Double-sided printing wants numbers on the outer edge
Books alternate the number between the right side on odd pages and the left side on even pages. This tool puts the number in the same spot on every page. For anything printed on both sides, choose the centre position, which looks right on either side of the sheet.
The document already has some numbers
Old numbers are part of the page and cannot be removed here, so you will see both. Pick a position away from the existing ones, or number only the files that have none before you merge everything together.
Numbers look tiny on large pages
Font size is a fixed physical size, not a share of the page. 11 pt is fine on A4, but on an A3 drawing or a poster it looks lost. Raise the size until it is readable at the distance the page will be viewed from.
Number before or after merging?
If the final document should count straight through, merge all the parts first and number the merged file once. That way the last page shows the real total.
If each part should restart at 1, for example separate annexes of a contract, number each file on its own and merge them afterwards.
Questions
Can I write "Page 1 of 10"?
Yes. Choose that format and edit the text. {n} is the page number and {total} the page count.
Can I use accented letters in the page label?
Yes. Labels are written with a font that covers Polish, German, French, Czech and most other European letters, so a label like „Strona 1 z 10” comes out exactly as typed.
Can I start page numbering at 0?
Yes. "Start at" accepts 0, so the first page shows 0 and the second page shows 1. Some technical manuals use this so the cover is page 0.
Can I use Roman numerals for page numbers?
Not at the moment. Numbers are written as 1, 2, 3 and so on. You can still put your own words around them, such as "Annex A, page {n}".
Are the added page numbers real text?
Yes. They are written as text, not as a picture, so they stay sharp at any zoom and can be found with the search function of a PDF viewer.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The tool runs in your browser and the files never leave your device. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.
