How to resize an image to exact pixels or by percentage
Pick how you want to resize: by pixels or by percentage. In pixel mode you type a width, a height or both. Leave height at 0 and the tool works it out from the width, so a 4000 by 3000 photo set to 1200 wide comes out at 1200 by 900. In percentage mode a slider goes from 5 to 200 percent and both sides change by the same amount.
When you fill in both width and height with Keep aspect ratio switched on, the image is scaled to fit inside that box. A landscape photo resized to 1000 by 1000 becomes 1000 wide and shorter than 1000 tall. Nothing is cropped and nothing is stretched. Switch the option off and the picture is forced to exactly the size you typed, even if that squashes it.
Your browser draws each image onto a canvas at the new size with high quality smoothing, then saves it. JPG and WEBP are saved again at a high quality setting, PNG stays lossless. The new size goes into the file name, for example holiday_1200x900.jpg, which makes it easy to tell versions apart. Photos are processed on your device, so a folder of family pictures never leaves it.
Common problems when resizing images
The result is not the exact size I typed
With Keep aspect ratio on, one side will be smaller than the box whenever the shape of the photo differs from it. If a site needs exactly 800 by 800 and your photo is not square, either switch the option off and accept some stretching, or crop the photo to a square first in your phone's editor and then resize.
The resized photo looks soft
Shrinking a large photo to a very small size can lose fine texture. Try a slightly larger target, or resize in one step from the original rather than shrinking an already shrunk copy. Each extra pass softens it a little more.
My HEIC or GIF came back as a JPG
Resized files keep their format only when they are PNG or WEBP. JPG stays JPG, and other inputs such as HEIC, GIF, BMP or AVIF are saved as JPG because browsers cannot write those formats. An animated GIF becomes a still picture of its first frame.
The photo turned sideways after resizing
It usually works the other way: the tool reads the orientation tag your phone stored and saves the pixels the right way up. If a picture was already rotated wrongly in the original, run it through Rotate & Flip Image afterwards.
Pixels vs percentage: which resize mode to use
Use pixels when a destination states a size: a blog theme that shows images 1200 px wide, a marketplace that wants 1000 px squares, an email signature at 300 px. You get a predictable result for every file, even if the originals all differ.
Use percentage when you only want things smaller and the exact number does not matter, such as halving a batch of photos before sending. Bear in mind that 50 percent of a 12 megapixel photo and 50 percent of a small screenshot give very different sizes.
Questions
Will my image be stretched?
Not while "Keep aspect ratio" is on. The image is scaled to fit within the width and height you set.
Does the format change?
No. JPG stays JPG, PNG stays PNG and WEBP stays WEBP.
What size should a photo be for a website?
Match the width it is actually shown at. For most blog and shop layouts that is somewhere between 1200 and 2000 px. Anything wider just adds weight the visitor never sees.
Can I resize many photos to different sizes in one go?
One run applies the same settings to every file. For two different sizes, run the batch twice. The file names include the dimensions, so the two sets will not clash.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The tool runs in your browser and the files never leave your device. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.
