Every time a JPG is edited and saved again it loses a little quality. Converting to PNG stops that: from now on, saves are lossless. The file will be larger, often several times.

How to convert JPG to PNG without losing quality

Add your JPG or JPEG files and press Convert. There are no settings to worry about, because PNG is lossless: every pixel the browser decodes from the JPG is written into the PNG exactly as it is. What you see in the JPG is what you get in the PNG, down to the last pixel.

The work is done by your browser on your own device. It reads the JPG, applies the orientation stored by the camera so the picture is the right way up, draws it onto a canvas and saves it as PNG. The width and height stay the same. The file name stays the same too, only the extension changes, and a batch of files comes back as one ZIP.

Two things are left behind on the way. EXIF data, such as camera model, date and GPS position, is not copied into the PNG. And the PNG does not carry a DPI value, so some print or layout programs will assume a default one. The pixels themselves are untouched, which is the part that decides how sharp a print can be.

JPG to PNG questions people search for, with answers

The background did not become transparent

Converting a format does not remove anything from the picture. A JPG has no transparency, so the white or coloured background is part of the image and stays in the PNG. To get a transparent background you need a background removal tool or an image editor. Do that after converting, since PNG can then store the transparency.

The print shop says the image is 72 DPI

DPI is just a label telling software how large to print the pixels. Since the PNG carries no DPI value, the shop's software falls back to its default. What matters is the pixel count. A 3000 by 2000 px image prints sharply at about 25 by 17 cm at 300 DPI, whatever the label says. Tell the shop the size you want in centimetres.

The PNG is too heavy to email

A photo in PNG form can easily be several times the size of the JPG. If the recipient only needs to look at it, send the original JPG. If they need PNG, zip the files or share them through a cloud folder instead of attaching them.

JPG vs PNG for editing, printing and the web

Editing: PNG wins. You can open, change and save it many times without losing anything. A JPG loses a little each time it is saved again, which shows after several rounds as blur and blocky patches.

Printing: both print the same if the pixel count is the same. Many print services accept either, and some ask for PNG for graphics with text or sharp lines.

The web: JPG or WEBP for photos, because PNG photos load slowly. PNG for interface graphics, icons and screenshots.

Questions

Will PNG make my photo better?

No. It keeps the quality you have now and prevents further loss, but it cannot undo earlier JPG compression.

Why is the PNG so much larger?

PNG stores every pixel exactly, while JPG throws away detail you barely see. For photos that difference adds up.

Can I convert JPG to PNG on an iPhone or Android phone?

Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome on the phone, pick the photos and download the PNG files or the ZIP. Nothing is installed and the photos are not uploaded.

Does JPG to PNG work with .jpeg and .JPG files?

Yes. JPG and JPEG are the same format with two spellings of the extension, and upper or lower case does not matter.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The tool runs in your browser and the files never leave your device. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.
