PNG is great for graphics but heavy for photos. Saving a photo-like PNG as JPG often makes it five to ten times smaller. Transparent areas are filled with white because JPG has no transparency.

How to convert PNG to JPG and make the file smaller

Add one PNG or a whole folder of them, set the quality and press Convert. Each image is opened by your browser, placed on a white background and saved as a JPG with the same width and height. Nothing is sent anywhere, so screenshots of bank apps, chats or work documents stay on your computer.

The quality slider starts at 85 percent and goes from 10 to 100. It only affects how much detail the JPG encoder keeps, not the pixel size. For photos, 80 to 85 is usually invisible to the eye. For screenshots with small text, go higher, because JPG is built for smooth photographic areas and struggles a little with hard black-on-white edges.

The new file keeps the name of the original with a .jpg extension, so screenshot-01.png becomes screenshot-01.jpg. Because the image is redrawn, any text chunks or metadata stored inside the PNG are not copied. Converting more than one file gives you a ZIP with all of them.

PNG to JPG problems: halos, white boxes and bigger files

Faint smudges appear around text and lines

These are JPG compression artefacts. They show up next to sharp, high contrast edges. Raise quality to 92 or higher and convert again from the original PNG. If the image is mostly text or a diagram, consider keeping it as PNG.

The JPG is bigger than the PNG

Simple graphics with large flat areas and few colours, such as a logo or a chart, compress very well as PNG. JPG is not designed for that and can come out larger. Use PNG to JPG for photos and busy screenshots, not for flat artwork.

The edges of a cut-out object look rough

A cut-out PNG often has semi-transparent pixels along its edge so it blends into any background. In JPG those pixels are mixed with white. On a white page that looks fine. On a dark page it leaves a light outline, so keep the PNG for dark designs.

The upload still fails after converting

Some sites limit dimensions as well as file size. A phone screenshot can be over 2500 px tall. Run the JPG through Resize Image to bring it down, or through Compress Image if only the weight is the problem.

When to keep PNG and when to switch to JPG

Switch to JPG for photos saved as PNG by an editor, for camera pictures, and for screenshots of photos, maps or video. These have smooth colour changes that JPG handles well, and the file gets much smaller.

Keep PNG for logos, icons, anything with transparency, line drawings, charts and screenshots that are mostly text. If you want a small file and transparency at the same time, WEBP is the format that offers both.

Questions

Which quality setting should I use?

85 to 90 percent looks the same as the original for most photos and saves a lot of space. Go lower only if the file must be very small.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?

They become white, because JPG cannot store transparency.

Can I choose a black or coloured background instead of white?

Not in this tool. Transparent areas are always filled with white, which is what most documents and websites expect.

Does converting PNG to JPG lower the resolution?

No. The JPG has exactly the same width and height in pixels. Only the way the colours are stored changes.

Is it possible to go back from the JPG to the original PNG?

You can convert the JPG to PNG again, but detail removed by JPG compression and the transparency will not come back. Keep the original PNG if you might need it.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. The tool runs in your browser and the files never leave your device. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.
