Every PDF carries hidden properties. The title is what browsers show in the tab, and the author field often contains the name of whoever made the original file. Fill in what you want to change and leave the rest empty.

How to edit PDF metadata like title and author online
The tool offers four fields: title, author, subject and keywords. Fill in only the ones you want to change. Anything left empty keeps its current value. The saved file has the same name as the one you added, so keep the original in a separate folder if you want both.
The checkbox "Remove all existing metadata first" wipes the title, author, subject and keywords, and also the creator and producer entries, which usually name the program and sometimes the version used to make the file. After that, any values you typed are written in. Tick the box and leave every field empty to get a file with blank properties.
Two things are not editable here. The creation date stays as it was, and the modification date is set to the moment you save. The whole job runs in your browser, so the file you are cleaning up is never copied to a server along the way.
PDF metadata not changing? Common problems and fixes
The viewer still shows the old title
Some PDFs carry a second copy of their properties in a block called XMP, and some viewers, including the one built into Firefox, read that copy first. This tool edits the standard properties, not the XMP block. A workaround: run the file through Extract PDF Pages with 1- to copy all pages into a fresh document without the old block, then set the metadata on that copy.
Keywords show up as one long phrase
Keywords are split only at commas. Semicolons or spaces between words keep everything together as a single keyword. Write them as "invoice, 2026, client name", with a comma between each one.
The browser tab shows the file name instead of a title
That happens when the title property is empty. Type a clear title, such as the document name a reader would search for, and the tab will show it the next time the PDF is opened.
You want to hide which program made the file
The producer and creator entries often reveal software names, and sometimes a company template. Ticking "Remove all existing metadata first" blanks both. Then fill in only the fields you are happy to share.
Metadata title or file name: which one people see
The file name is what people see in their downloads folder and as an email attachment. It changes the moment someone renames the file.
The title travels inside the PDF. It appears in browser tabs, in some search results and in document libraries, no matter what the file is called. Set both, and keep them consistent so the document is easy to recognise.
Questions
What is PDF metadata?
Information stored inside the file, such as title, author, subject, keywords and the app that created it. It is not visible on the pages.
Does this remove all personal data?
It clears the standard document properties. Names written on the pages themselves or in comments stay.
How can I check the current metadata of a PDF?
Most desktop PDF readers show it under File, then Properties or Document Properties. In Firefox, open the PDF and look for Document Properties in the viewer menu.
Can I change the creation date of a PDF?
No. This tool leaves the creation date untouched and updates the modification date to the time you save.
Will editing metadata break a digital signature?
Yes. Any change to a digitally signed file, even to its hidden properties, makes the signature report that the document was modified. Edit the metadata before the file is signed.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The tool runs in your browser and the files never leave your device. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.
