How to Combine PDFs Into One File

By Krystian Szyszka · Published · 4 min read

A job application, a visa form or a rental request often needs several documents at once. A resume, a cover letter, a diploma, a certificate, a reference letter. Sending them as five separate attachments works, but it rarely makes a good impression. One clean PDF in a sensible order is easier to read, harder to lose and simpler to forward.

This guide shows how to combine several PDFs into one, how to add photos of paper documents, and what to check before you send the result.

Why one file is better than five

Think about the person on the other side. They may get dozens of applications a day. Each attachment is another click, another download and another chance that something gets skipped.

  • Nothing gets lost. When an application is forwarded to a manager, all the pages travel together.
  • You choose the order. The reader sees your strongest document first, not whatever their mail app lists first.
  • Upload forms are happier. Many recruitment portals and online offices accept only one file per field, or a small number of files in total.
  • It looks organised. One well named PDF quietly says you pay attention to detail.

Choose a sensible order

Before you combine anything, decide what goes where. For a job application a typical order is:

  • Cover letter, if one is required. It explains who you are and why you apply.
  • Resume or CV.
  • Diplomas and certificates, most relevant first.
  • Reference letters or recommendations.
  • Anything else the job ad asked for, such as a portfolio sample.

Some employers ask for the resume first. If the ad says so, follow it. For official documents, such as a visa or a grant application, follow the order in the checklist you were given. Officials often check documents one by one against that list.

How to combine PDFs into one

With Merge PDF on DocJuno:

  • Open the tool and drop in all your PDFs at once.
  • Put them in the right order with the up and down arrows next to each file.
  • Tap Merge PDF and download the combined file.

The files are joined right in your browser. Your resume, diplomas and ID copies are not uploaded to any server, which matters with documents this personal.

If you need to fine tune the order of single pages later, for example to move one certificate page, Reorder PDF Pages lets you rearrange the pages of the finished file.

Got paper documents? Turn photos into PDF first

Not everything starts as a PDF. A diploma may only exist on paper, and a reference letter might be a scan you took with your phone.

Take a straight, well lit photo of each page, ideally on a dark background so the edges are clear. Then use JPG to PDF to turn the photos into a PDF. After that, add it to the merge with the rest of your files.

Check page orientation

Phone photos and some scans end up sideways or upside down. It is easy to miss in a thumbnail and annoying for the reader, who has to rotate the page in their viewer.

Open the merged file and scroll through every page. If a page is turned, fix it with Rotate PDF, which can rotate single pages or the whole document.

Watch the file size

Combining files adds their sizes together. A few typed PDFs stay small, but scans and phone photos are heavy. Many upload forms limit files to 5 or 10 MB, and email usually stops around 20 to 25 MB.

If the merged PDF is too big, run it through Compress PDF. For documents with photos or scans the size usually drops a lot, while the text stays readable. Open the result and zoom in on small print to make sure.

Name the file clearly

The file name is the first thing a recruiter sees. "Document1.pdf" or "scan_final_2.pdf" gets lost in a downloads folder.

A good pattern is Name_Surname_Position.pdf, for example "Alex_Sample_Product_Designer.pdf". It tells the reader whose file it is and what it is for, even months later. Avoid special characters and very long names, since some upload forms reject them.

A short checklist

  • Collect all the documents the ad or checklist asks for.
  • Turn photos of paper documents into PDF.
  • Merge everything in a sensible order.
  • Scroll through every page and fix any sideways ones.
  • Check the size and compress if needed.
  • Give the file a clear name before you attach it.

Ten minutes of tidying turns a pile of attachments into one document that is easy to read and easy to say yes to.

Questions

Is there a limit on how many PDFs I can combine?

There is no fixed number. Everything runs in your browser, so very large sets depend on your device memory. Dozens of normal documents are no problem.

Will merging keep links and selectable text?

Yes. Pages are copied as they are, so typed text stays selectable and searchable. Scanned pages stay images, just as they were before.

Can I combine PDFs on my phone?

Yes. DocJuno works in the mobile browser. Pick the files from your files app, set the order and download the merged PDF on the phone.
